On December 2, 2018 I presented at a Carers Day Out which was a collaborative event between IDareU, Yarrunga Community Centre, Real Life Theatre and myself. It was an honour to have been asked and included to talk on Carer Wellbeing.
This is a passion close to my heart as through the years of my teaching I sat as I heard carers speak about the joy, trials and life that comes with being a carer. I loved my Parent Support Group Meetings…this is when I felt like I was doing what it was I was born to do…along with teaching. I remember thinking after one particular IEP meeting that I wish I could do this full-time…and so I have plotted this path…with a few little hurdles in my way.
After a very long year of recovering from a serious complex foot lisfranc injury, 5 breaks in my foot and 3 surgeries after fainting from endometriosis complications I was so excited to be given the chance to do something…so I jumped, or rather crutched my way into this presentation on Carer Wellbeing.
Carers are one of the lowest recorded populations studied in terms of wellbeing…many live their lives like they are in a battle zone. The last person receiving care is the carer…which is why now I want to venture in this space.
I hope you enjoy the presentation I have put together…
The greatest indicator of good health is social support!
I gave this presentation sitting down with my foot up! I really enjoyed not standing for my presentation (well I couldn’t anyway) but it’s the way I am talking with, not to, an audience. Plus, I’m not the type who likes to stand up the front – I like to be sit and connect with people face to face, at their side.
I’ll be forever thankful for this opportunity to present as it was at only 2 weeks after surgery. I didn’t know if I could, but I did…It helped in my own recovery. So it’s my takeaway – have goals, something to focus on forward…I have plenty now. First though my 2019 priorities are to finish what I started my Austswim Teacher Training Course and my Masters of Health Sciences (Rehabilitation Counselling). It will be done!
Something to look forward to…
